The rain starting pouring heavily as Fayna took shelter in the mouth of a cave. She just barely avoided getting wet. Inside the cave was dark, and outside was wet. Fayna had to make a decision. Any normal fairy would sooner go out in the rain than even think about exploring a dark cave. Fayna, however, was not a normal fairy. Any danger she could possibly find was better than the boring life her family wanted for her. Fayna walked deeper into the cave, her wings providing a small bit a light. Enough to see where she was going, but not enough to wake anything that might be sleeping. Or so she hoped.
She walked for several minutes without seeing anything. No bats, no goblins, not even a bug. Surely this cave was inhabited. Yet it wasn't. Why was nothing here? The question burned in her mind, and she was determined to find the answer. She had read about large creatures that often lived alone in caves. Was this cave home to such a creature? The thought of finding one excited her. There was no record of any type of creature, not even what it looks like, only that it exists. She could be the first fairy to encounter one! The more she thought about it, the more excited she got. Little did she realize that her excitement made her wings glow more brightly.
A bone chilling roar snapped her back into reality, and her wings began to dim. What was that? Was it the creature? She had to know! She couldn't tell which way it came from. The cave was very large and had many different pathways. She decided to wait for awhile to see if she could hear it again. There was nothing. There was no point in waiting. She brightened her wings and moved on. Perhaps if she couldn't find it, it could find her.
She wondered for what seemed like hours, until finally she found herself in a large chamber full of shining gem stones. The glow of her wings made the gems sparkle. She brightened her wings more, causing the stones to shine more brightly. She had found something far more beautiful than any fairy could hope for. She took flight, wanting to see every gem stone up close. She wanted to take the stones back home with her, but knew she shouldn't ruin the natural beauty of the cave. She lost herself in the beauty she had found just as the roar from earlier filled the entire chamber. It was much closer this time.
She could hear a rumbling sound in the distance, getting louder and louder. She knew it was the creature getting closer to her. The creature had to be enormous for it to be as loud as it was. Fayna landed on a nearby rock, readying herself to meet the creature. As a fairy, she was able to communicate with many different types of creatures, although her own skills were rather lackluster. She figured she wouldn't have too hard a time talking to the creature. At least enough to let it know she wasn't a threat.
At the far end of the chamber, she could see movement. She brightened her wings to get a better view. She could see it! It was a head. A very large, crimson head belonging to some kind of a reptile. This was fascinating! The creature moved closer to Fayna, revealing the rest of its giant body. This was no mere reptile. Its head was easily twice the size of Fayna. It had wings folded against its enormous body, that she could only guess the length of. Its razor sharp claws dug into the ground, and its long tail swung back and forth as the creature approached. Soon it was right in front of Fayna, staring at her.
She was no longer excited. She was frightened. She wanted to let it know she wasn't a threat, but she knew full well it knew she wasn't. No, not a threat, but a meal.
I'll leave it at a cliff hanger for now. Let me know what you think.
